"To Love Somebody" is a song written by Robin Hugh Gibb and Barry Alan Gibb. Produced by Robert Stigwood and Ossie Byrne. Universal Music Publishing Group & Warner/Chappell. It was the second single released by the Bee Gees from their international debut album, Bee Gees 1st, in 1967.Recorded at IBC Studios, London in March 1967 and released it as a single in mid-July 1967 in the US.

When Barry and Robin Gibb wrote “To Love Somebody,” they hoped Otis Redding would end up singing it, but, tragically, Otis died not long after they got the chance to play it for him. But the song did end up getting the Memphis soul treatment it was always intended to have when James Carr, the singer that those in the know consider to be Otis’ only equal (and some consider to be the best soul singer, full-stop), covered the Bee Gees hit in 1969.
